The fruit of self-examination

In her classic book introducing spiritual disciplines, Soul Feast, Marjorie Thompson offers the following wisdom:

“Self-examination is an occassion for spiritual refreshment, whatever we discover within ourself at the time of review. Its purpose is always to bring us into greater intimacy with the Lover of our souls, so that we can learn to walk according to God’s path for us. Indeed, the practice of self-examination will only blossom out of a genuine desire to belong more completely to God and to love as God loves.”

She goes on to give us these fruits that come from examining ourselves daily,

  • Knowledge of self and knowledge of God go hand in hand
  • Increasing truthfulness
  • Greater compassion
  • Peace within ourselves which allows us to offer peace to others

These are all traits that I long to grow in. How about you?
