Prayers in Grief

Loving God,

Be near.

As we cry, as we move in shock, as we wonder why,

Be near.

As anger grows and sorrow is overwhelming,

Be near.

As fear takes hold and tears are our food,

Be near.

As we watch and blame and criticize,

Be near.

As we dare to assign reason and fault,

Be near.

As we search for hope and feel lost in the darkness,

Be near.

As we accuse You of absence

Be near.

As we hold pain at bay and forget a stranger’s pain

Be near.

As Christmas and birthdays go without celebration

Be near.

As anger threatens to harden to bitterness

Be near.

As fear gives way to terror

Be near.

O Come, Emmanuel. Come and be near.
